PokeFavorites: Xatu
Oh Xatu...as you can infer from my banner, I fucking love avians, whether fictional or real life ones, they are animals that have a lot of meaning to me, I relate to them on more than just a normal level. Which means if I see an avian-based Pokemon, I have to love it. Xatu also has access to some interesting abilities like Magic Bounce, which means if you try and apply a status effect it will bounce back.
Once again...the stats are pretty awful, better than Quagsire by about 40 total points but that still doesn't mean a lot. I personally like using Xatu as a support Pokemon for the mentioned Magic Bounce, combine that with the decent speed and special attack, it works great for getting rid of hazards on the field during play.
I'd for sure take Xatu over the other 470 total stat Pokemon, I'm looking at you Klefki even if I like the fact you are a Fairy/Steel type!
When it comes to PokeDex entries, this one from Pokemon UltraMoon is so funny to me, it states...
"While it can see the future, it has no desire to change it, which is probably why it remains motionless at all times."
The fact that Xatu can see the future isn't what makes me laugh, it's the whole theme behind it, but the idea that it is just like eh, I don't wanna change it. This fucker could of stopped 9/11 and didn't, what a sick bastard!
Xatu MUST be held accountable!
And I wonder why I have so little friends... Anyways! But in all honesty I think it's cute that this thing is just sort of done and is neutral about being able to see the future. Just staring into the sun all day not doing anything, Xatu must have amazing eyesight if it can do that. I remember as a kid my mom telling me not to stare at the sun and I went to do it right in front her, it hurt, I yelled and she said "I told you not to!" Somehow I am still alive despite my constant stupidity.
When it comes to Xatus shiny design it is...so nothing. It's just a slightly lighter lime green, with orange instead of red accents. It could easily be improved, just makes the accents blue or purple, it would really bring something new to the table. But no, some shiny Pokemon get the short end of the stick and end up looking either ugly as sin or barely any differences. I'd rather take an ugly shiny than a boring one.
I still love Xatu to bits despite the terrible shiny, the future-sight, the fact it's an avian and also that it is based on totem poles from certain Native American cultures is fascinating. I feel like the Pokemon Company misses out when it comes to Native culture and the respectful inspiration that could be taken. Xatu is the best example of doing the usual Pokemon business but also bringing in something from the real world, without being offensive.
I'm looking at you Jinx...I'm looking at you.
